Video: 5 easy posing tips for better portraits

Have you ever struggled to get your subjects to relax in front of your lens?

Well, in this useful hands-on video, Glyn Dewis addresses some of the most common posing challenges photographers face when capturing portraits.

He begins with a clever tactic: act as if you're adjusting your camera settings when, in reality, you're giving your subject time to relax. This simple move can be a game-changer when working with subjects who appear stiff or overly posed—though Dewis notes it should be used sparingly.

In addition, we really liked Dewis' idea of building a mental reference library of poses drawn from the 'masters', ie famous portrait photographers, rather than relying solely on in-the-moment inspiration.

Another valuable technique Dewis shares is to take a step back and engage your subject in casual conversation. This approach encourages authentic expressions and natural body language—often resulting in more natural photos.

Dewis also touches on using props and how these can further break down barriers, with the ultimate goal of getting your subject to relax.
