Tamron has introduced the new 16-30mm f/2.8 G2 lens as the successor to its well-regarded 17-28mm f/2.8 Di III RXD, originally launched in 2019.

The new model offers a slightly broader zoom range while retaining the compact, lightweight form factor that made its predecessor popular.

A key improvement is the upgraded autofocus system, which now uses a voice coil linear motor, which Tamron says should offer a faster and quieter performance.

Additional enhancements include a refined lens barrel design with improved grip and control surfaces, the inclusion of a USB port for use with Tamron’s Lens Utility software, and a customisable function button.

The lens features an optical construction of 16 elements in 12 groups and a 9-blade aperture diaphragm designed to produce smooth, attractive bokeh. It offers a minimum focusing distance of 19 cm at 16mm and 30 cm at 30mm, with a maximum reproduction ratio of 1:5.4.

The lens supports 67mm filters, a standard across many Tamron lenses. The Sony E-mount version measures 101.8 mm and weighs 440 grams, while the Nikon Z-mount version is slightly longer and heavier at 103.9 mm and 450 grams.

Both versions are supplied with a petal-shaped lens hood and front and rear caps.

Set to retail at $1,799, the Sony E-mount lens is due to go on sale on 31 July, while the Nikon Z version will follow on 22 August. See here for more info.
