John Dalton, Worry at Spring Harvest (May theme: Seasons)

Farmers wives will tell you that men get more worried at harvest time than at any other time. During the spring harvest of wheat, good timing is essential. It must happen when the wheat is hard, there are no storms and the contract header is available. Local bushfires nearby create a sense of foreboding in the smoky air. Although it is a relief to see the wheat finally go in the truck, the smoke-filled air suggests menace and the sunset suggests a usual late finish to work at harvest time. There is a sense of tension and impatience. These aspects are writ large in the farmer overseeing the harvest. His body language suggests some angst as these factors play out. His pensive mood is captured in the few moments of stillness while the truck fills. The harvest is going ok but it is not over yet.
