Genevieve Ackland, Regional Victoria on Film (TRAVEL 2020)

Australians have long been used to escaping our albeit mild winters for a popularized ‘Euro Summer’, trading in our winds and rain for the turquoise waters and long evenings of summertime in Europe. This year has brought an abrupt interruption to any of those plans, and Australians have been forced to turn inwards, not only for personal strength and resilience through a pandemic, but also to our own landscapes for travel and escape. Regional Victoria shines a quiet brilliance over winter, the colours seeming brighter amongst the inhospitable conditions, like the ocean appearing all the more beautiful when you can’t get in it. If you sit quietly long enough, winter will win you over with its moments. These moments collected here were captured on 35mm film using a 1964 rangefinder camera.
