Karinya Oldfield, Portrait by a Scribbly Gum Moth (CREATIVE 2020)
Reputed as Australia’s artists of the insect world; the Scribbly Gum Moth tunnels through bark of the Eucalyptus tree, first as larvae and then as a caterpillar which eats the nutritious scar tissue created from its initial passage, travelling back along the same route to eventually spin a cocoon at the base of the tree. I found this particular section of tunnelling resembled some of the great abstract artworks such as Picasso’s portraiture.
