Philip Lawrence, Nostalgia (PEOPLE 2020)

NOSTALGIA Nostalgia is a yearning for something or sometime past, often relating to childhood or young adulthood. For many, Nostalgia is an ephemeral feeling, perhaps a combination of joy of what once was and a twinge of regret that it is no longer --- a bitter sweet recollection. This feeling of Nostalgia is often given life by symbols; For example, an object such as a photograph, toy or token. It can also be an activity or even a smell that is associated with something that is familiar, safe and remembered fondly, but cannot be recaptured. My series of photographs attempts to rekindle Nostalgia through portraits of individuals holding an object important to them. Each image tells a different story of recollection that triggers a Nostalgic memory. Subjects were asked to identify a Nostalgic episode in earlier life, any emotional feeling aroused and to describe it in their own words. I then photographed them holding their special object or trigger
