Peter Morton, Hiroshima - tragedy and hope (BLACK & WHITE 2020)

I visited Hiroshima in 2019 and it is the saddest place I have ever been. On 6 August 1945 during WW2, the city was flattened by an atomic bomb which instantly killed around 80,000 people. The Genbaku Dome was at Ground Zero, and one of the few buildings to survive. Today it is a sad and enduring symbol which dominates the Peace Park and is surrounded by the modern buildings and skyscrapers of a rebuilt Hiroshima. These buildings are as they were in 1945. In photo 3 a man can be seen in the background through a ruined window. He is like a ghost from the past. In photo 4 trees flourish and cheerful school kids patiently wait to complete their excursion. If they had been in this identical place in 1945 they would have been obliterated.
