Matthew Wilkinson, Floating Bananas at Kaptai Lake, Chittagong Hill Tracts, Bangladesh. (March theme: Beauty)

I took this photograph while doing research in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, Bangladesh, a contested and militarized region that has hosted prolonged conflict between Indigenous communities and settler Bengalis. Much of this conflict has centred on the Kaptai Lake, Bangladesh's largest manmade lake. Since its initial filling in 1963, Kaptai has displaced some 40,000 Indigenous residents, mostly from Chakma and Marma tribes. Despite its dark history, and the ongoing communal conflict between displaced tribals and new Bengali settlers, the lake itself is still, serene, and beautiful.
