Seth Lazar, Drover's Rest (May theme: The night sky)
This one is a bit of fun, taken from the top of the hill that we live on, south of Michelago (private property again, photo taken with owner's permission). I recently treated myself to an Akubra, the iconic Aussie drover's hat. And I also recently did my first ever proper Milky Way selfie. I've also been driving around and around the area, looking for features that break the horizon, that I can align with the MW. So while we were driving down to Currango Homestead yesterday, in northern Kosciuszko National Park, on a Mother's Day road trip, these different elements all came together, and I was itching to try out this composition. The dry weather continued (we could seriously do with some rain), and it's a clear cold night out tonight—I just got back in. I shot this with my 85mm; I did a mosaic with more frames, but I like the tight crop of the original frame, with the lagoon nebula so prominent. It's just two photos blended together, edited in Lightroom and blended in photoshop, with some contrast enhancement and star reduction. Oh, and how about the shooting star over my shoulder? I'm stood on a 5 foot cairn, with a post in the middle, to mark the top of the hill.
