Nigel Wilson, Black swan, come fly with me? (September theme: Things that fly)
The black swan (cygnus atratus) is Australia's only native swan. Here, two swans are at rest on the banks of the Onkaparinga River (Ngangkiparri), Port Noarlunga, South Australia before taking flight. Once described in Juvenal's Satire VI as "a bird as rare upon the earth as a black swan" and, more recently, in "black swan" events, the black swan is a magnificent, nomadic bird with a characteristic "S" neck and a bugle-like voice.
