Photograph Mongolias Eagle Hunters and Reindeer Herders

Deep in the remote Altai Mountains of western Mongolia, Kazakh eagle hunters still ride on horseback with golden eagles perched on their arms, a tradition that has survived for centuries in one of the world’s most isolated landscapes.

For photographers, it offers an extraordinary opportunity to document one of the last living nomadic hunting cultures on Earth.

Led by Australian photographer Glenn McKimmin, alongside highly respected photographers David Oliver GM Photog and Clare Oliver, this immersive expedition takes a small group of photographers deep into Mongolia to photograph the legendary eagle hunters and their families.

Rather than staged encounters, participants spend time living with local Kazakh families, photographing daily life, traditional hunting practices and the remarkable bond between hunter and eagle.

From sweeping mountain landscapes to powerful environmental portraits, the experience offers rare photographic opportunities that very few photographers ever witness.

The expedition is limited to just 12 photographers, allowing plenty of time for mentoring, guidance and image development in the field with three experienced instructors.

For those seeking an even more unique cultural experience, a second expedition travels north into Mongolia’s remote taiga forests to photograph the Tsaatan reindeer herders.

Living close to the Siberian border, the Tsaatan people maintain one of the world’s last nomadic reindeer cultures.

Travelling by 4WD into the remote taiga forests of northern Mongolia, photographers spend time with Dukha reindeer herder families and document their daily lives.

With over 17 years leading international photography expeditions and more than 500 photographers guided in the field, Glenn McKimmin has built a reputation for creating immersive photographic journeys in some of the world’s most remarkable locations.

Together with David and Clare Oliver, participants benefit from the guidance of three highly experienced photographers throughout the expedition.

The 2026 Eagle Hunters expedition is already filling quickly, with only a handful of places remaining.

A second departure in 2027 is now open for booking.

For a limited time, photographers booking before March 31 receive:

  • $500 off a single expedition
  • $1,000 off when booking both the Eagle Hunters and Reindeer Herders journeys
