Video: Fujifilm profiles the most famous artist you've never heard of
Have you ever heard of Sarah Oliphant? We're guessing probably not, but as the artist behind the prolific Oliphant Studio photo backdrops, used by some of the biggest names in the photography industry, her work is some of the most important to photography in the 21st century.
Photographers like Annie Leibovitz, Martin Schoeller, David LaChapelle, Richard Avedon and Anne Geddes have all used Oliphant backdrops, and in this fantastic video by Fujifilm, you'll learn about Sarah and her work.
What we really liked though is that the short doco isn't just skin deep - it also looks at the challenging family dynamics that have shaped her and her work, and the complexity of legacy and family relationships, especially as she comes to the tail-end of her career.
This is illustrated through Sarah's daughter Violet, initially joining her mother in the studio, and later conflicted between paying homage to her parents and forging her own path.
At the same time, the doco celebrates the beauty of craft - commitment to creating something unique and deserving of the subjects that will stand in front of it - even if they may never be acknowledged.
