Tested Waterproof Compact Cameras

Peter Burian checks out the latest waterproof, shockproof, dust-proof and freeze-proof cameras for photographers who want their cameras to go everywhere they do.

Now it's summer, almost everyone seems to be on holidays. And what better camera to take with you to the beach or out bush than one of the current crop of waterproof compact cameras. As the name suggests, these cameras can take a serious dunking.

But even if you never get below the surface, a rugged, well sealed camera is handy because it can withstand bumps while boating, or being dropped into the sand, or being covered in mud...

And they are freeze-resistant too, which isn't a big plus in the Australian summer but great if you are planning an overseas trip or you hope to join a photo tour to Antartica.

The number of very rugged , waterproof cameras has expanded rapidly in recent years and today some retailers offer dozens of models.

The most recent models are usually the most desirable, because they use the newest technology and offer the latest features. As well as built-in flash, all of the cameras in this report offer a Movie mode, typically Full HD 1080p for recording high-quality video clips.
