Sony has announced the NEX-FS700,
a professional video camera that uses the same E-mount lens system as Sony’s
NEX-7 and NEX-5N still cameras.
The new model will initially offer 1080p resolution but will, at a later stage,
be able to output 4K data when used with an optional Sony 4K recorder. (With a resolution of 3996 x 2160 pixels, 4K devices deliver around four times the resolution of Full HD, which is 1920 x 1080
pixels.)
The camera can be switched
between 50 and 60Hz with available frame rates of 60p, 50p, 60i and 24p. It
also offers super-slow-motion footage, at frame rates of 240fps at Full HD or
960fps at lower resolutions.
Two ND filters are built-in to
the camera, allowing users to darken a scene by up to 6-stops and therefore
enabling them to choose wider apertures with commensurately less less depth of
field. There are three ND filter settings allowing users to darken the image by
two, four and six stops.
The camera is expected to go on
sale in June 2012. Prices have not been announced but it is expected to retail for less than $10,000.
