Sony’s latest mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera, the NEX-5R, includes built-in wi-fi and a new hybrid autofocus system. The lightweight model supersedes last year’s NEX-5N and features a 16.1-megapixel APS-sized sensor and a 3in (76mm) touchscreen LCD.

With 'Fast Hybrid AF' the camera uses contrast and phase detection systems with 99 focus points to improve focussing speed and accuracy. At launch there will be just four lenses that can take advantage of the new focusing system  – the E 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 OSS; E 55-210mm F4-6.3 OSS; E 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 OSS; and E 24mm F1.8ZA Sonnar T*. Sony says it plans to roll out firmware upgrades that will steadily expand the range of lenses that offer Fast Hybrid AF support.

Built-in Wi-Fi lets users transfer files to smartphones or post images and movies directly to websites such as Facebook and Youtube. You can also control the NEX-5R remotely using an Android smartphone, with plans to launch an app for iOS devices soon.

Sony has also introducing PlayMemories Camera Apps, an app store dedicated to Sony cameras. Launch applications include “Picture Effect+” and “Bracket Pro”.

Other key features include: 10 frames per second continuous shooting, Full HD movies, 180° tilting (up-down) LCD, touchscreen shutter function, and a digital level gauge.

The NEX-5R will be available in early November. The body-only kit will retail for $799, while the single-lens kit is expected to carry an RRP of $999.
