Sony has released details of its newest fixed-mirror camera, the Alpha SLT-35. Hot on the heels of last year’s A33 and A55, the SLT-35 uses the same translucent-mirror design which reflects some light up to the camera’s AF sensors while allowing the rest to pass through to the main imaging sensor.

With a resolution of 16.2 effective megapixels, the newly-developed Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor offers a maximum sensitivity of ISO 12800 and can shoot Full HD (1080i) movies.

In stills mode the camera can fire up to 5.5 frames per second (fps) at maximum resolution. Making its debut on the SLT-A35, Tele-zoom High Speed Shooting magnifies a central portion of the image area to increase shooting speed to 7 fps while reducing resolution to 8.4 megapixels.

A new in-camera Picture Effect setting allows users to choose from several artistic treatments including Retro Photo, High-key, Toy Camera and Posterisation. The A35 can also produce Partial Colour effects, with a single colour picked out against the rest of the image in monochrome.

Sony claims the camera consumes less power, allowing up to 440 still shots between battery charges – a 30% increase over the A33.

The camera is compatible with all Sony A-mount lenses, including 26 Sony models and six Carl Zeiss lenses.

The SLT-35 will be available in Australia in July 2011 and will be sold as a body-only unit ($749), Single-lens kit ($949) and Twin-lens kit ($1199).
