A new entry level SLR from Nikon – the D3300 – has a 24.2 megapixel sensor and a ‘step by step’ user’s guide built in.

Nikon launched its D3300 SLR, replacing the D3200, at the CES Show in Las Vegas. It features a 24.2 megapixel DX format CMOS sensor but it has no optical low-pass filter in an effort to improve the detail and sharpness in an image. It runs an 'Expeed 4' image processor, and for beginners, Nikon has installed a guide mode, which it says offers “step by step” instruction on how to take better pictures.

For an entry level unit, the camera has an impressive ISO range, from 100 up to 12,800, with an option to expand to 25,600, and it can shoot continuously at 5fps. The lightweight D3300 (490g) can also record 1080/60p Full HD video. It has a 75mm (3in) rear LCD screen. Nikon has also released a new 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 VR II kit lens, with a minimum focussing distance of 0.25m, to go with the camera. The lens will be available as part of a D3300 kit or separately.

The D3300 with the new 18-55mm lens will be available in February, though at the time of writing prices weren't available.
