While it's been a quiet couple of weeks for new camera releases, the internet is buzzing with rumours that Nikon is about to launch its first mirrorless camera.
Sales of mirrorless cameras have grown rapidly since the first models arrived in 2008 and it has long been expected that Canon and Nikon would eventually join the fray. Current manufacturers of mirrorless systems include Sony (NEX), Panasonic (G-series), Olympus (Pen), Samsung (NX), and Pentax (Q-series).
Last week Reuters reported a story from a Japanese newspaper that said Nikon was set to release a new "mirrorless product at 70,000 yen-100,000 yen ($900-$1,300) including lens, which is on par with rivals' offerings and also with conventional SLR cameras."
This followed claims by website nikonrumors.com that not one but two Nikon mirrorless cameras were in the works, along with four lenses.
In response to those rumours (the Japanese story reportedly caused a 12% jump in Nikon's share price), Nikon released a statement to say it had not announced such a camera.
If we hear any more we'll be sure to let you know. In the meantime, given the amount of interest this "non-camera" has generated, you'd imagine that if Nikon wasn't working on a mirrorless camera before it surely is now!
