Nikon has unveiled two new FX-format digital SLRs, the D800 and D800E. The new models replace the D700 and feature 36.3-megapixel full-frame sensors, making these the highest-resolution full-frame DSLRs ever made.

The D800E is identical to the D800 with one difference. The anti-aliasing and moire pattern reduction operations performed by the low-pass filter have been disabled. This, says Nikon, means light passing through the lens strikes the photodiodes on the sensor directly for greater resolution. (It also means that aliasing and moiré patterns may be more noticeable in some images.)

Nikon is pushing the 800E variant for, "landscape, advertising and artistic photography, which demand higher resolution and clear definition."

Key features of the new model, apart from the remarkably high-resolution sensor, include a new EXPEED 3 image-processing engine, a 91,000-pixel RGB sensor and the ability to record uncompressed movies to an external recorder. There's also a 3-inch 921k-dot LCD screen on the back.

Australian pricing has not yet been announced.
