Renowned nature shooter Jürgen Freund, in partnership with James Cook University and The Cairns Institute, will run a nature photography masterclass in November.

Well-known nature photographer Jurgen Freund, in partnership with James Cook University and The Cairns Institute, is running an eight-day Masterclass package near Cairns from November 2 to 9, which includes accommodation at a four-star hotel plus field accommodation at the award-winning Chambers Wildlife Rainforest Lodge. All meals are provided by a personal chef, while there are fully guided tours and airport transfers, and all entry fees and field tuition from a JCU natural history scientist are included in the package. Each participant will also receive a James Cook University Certificate of Completion.

Over his 30 year career Jürgen Fruend has won some of the most prestigious awards in the world of nature photography, including BBC Wildlife Magazine Wildlife Photographer of the Year, World Press Photo Award for Photojournalism, Festival Mondial de l’images, and the Nikon Photo Contest International.

This Masterclass is for experienced photographers or field naturalists who want to advance their wildlife photography skills. Participants need to bring their own SLR camera and all the appropriate equipment. A 'sample' day's activity includes a sunrise start, feeding the birds at Chambers Lodge, and a training session on close-up photography of birds. Local species such as the Victoria’s Riflebird, the Green Catbird, and the Black Butcherbird are always on-site and Cassowaries often visit too.

After breakfast with a private chef participants will take in a 7:30am Lake Eacham Crater Lakes 3km circuit walk, a training session on landscape, macro and High Dynamic Range photography techniques. There will be a lunch with the private chef, followed at 2pm by visits to Cathedral Fig Tree and Curtain Fig Tree locations. These are massive rainforest trees which offer unique opportunities for training in close-up techniques.

Around 5pm the group will go to Chambers Creek to seek out wild platypus photo opportunities. At 6:19pm they’ll observe the sunset, at 6:30pm dinner will be served, and at 7:30pm there will be a Lake Eacham Light Painting training session. From 9pm there will be a chance to shoot night rainforest photography with sugar gliders, possums, and bandicoots. Optional shooting sessions will cover insect macro photography training and/or light painting photography in the rainforest.

The usual cost for this exclusive Masterclass is $3,800, but for subscribers to Australian Photography, organisers are offering this course for only $2,900.00 per person all inclusive for eight days. The Masterclass will run from Saturday, November 2 to Saturday, November 9, and places are limited to 20 participants. For more information, please go to: www.jcu.edu.au/naturemasterclass
