Momento relaunches under new ownership with new direction

Australian photobook brand Momento has been revived under new ownership, returning with updated technology, premium materials and a renewed focus on travel photobooks.

The original Momento closed in 2024 after 20 years in business, during which it became a popular platform for Australasian photographers to publish their work.

The new company launched in October 2025 after the brand name and website were purchased by Peter Thomas, owner of Melbourne printing supplier PhotobookShop.

PhotobookShop had already acquired many of Momento’s assets earlier in the year, but at the time was not able to take over the business itself. That has now changed, and the rebranded operation is officially underway as of October.

“Momento is a respected brand, and we wanted to keep it going,” Thomas said.

Although founders Geoff Hunt and Libby Jeffery are not involved in the new entity, Thomas said the aim is to deliver a product that feels familiar to long-time customers.

“It’s the same premium product that Momento users are used to,” he said.

The relaunch includes a complete technical rebuild, with new AI-powered publishing software developed from the ground up.

The brand has also chosen not to continue Momento Pro, which previously served professional photographers, as that segment is already covered by its own PhotobookShop Pro.

The new Momento is instead focused squarely on the travel market and positioned as a more premium alternative to PhotobookShop’s core offering.

The business is run by a team of five in Melbourne and has launched with a single book size and linen covers, supported by 20 templates and existing design options.

Each photobook includes a custom map on the first page, patterned end sheets and a linen cover. Photos are printed on 170gsm silk paper that is flexible, durable, FSC certified and acid free.

Thomas said the goal is to rebuild Momento as a high-quality, travel-focused brand supported by modern design tools and faster production.

Plans for the future include expanding availability beyond Australia and New Zealand and offering additional binding options.
