Irys, a new instagram-alternative, has officially launched
Photographer Alan Schaller has announced the launch of Irys, a new social platform built specifically for photographers as an alternative to mainstream networks where images are increasingly hidden by algorithms and overshadowed by video content.

Schaller, who has more than one million Instagram followers, began developing Irys two years ago after noticing the declining visibility of photography online.
“Photography isn’t the same online anymore for us, communities are kind of dwindling. People feel like they’re posting into the void,” he explained.
Irys distinguishes itself from traditional social apps by focusing on intentional community rather than clicks, swipes, or endless scrolling.
The platform offers curated feeds, AI-free uploads, and discovery tools designed to inspire rather than addict.
“No one can teach you how to see,” Schaller says. “But we can help you get seen, and make sure you leave feeling inspired.”
Beyond being a social network, Irys is positioning itself as a broader photography hub.
Plans include functioning as an agency representing photographers, partnering with galleries, publishing books, and producing a dedicated magazine.
“We believe photography is not disposable content. It is an art form, a career for some, a passion for others, and a special way of seeing. And Irys exists to deliver on that, with care, not just code,” Schaller says.
The platform emphasizes fair pay, ethical practices, and respect for the art form. “Photographers helped grow successful social media platforms and then got pushed out,” Schaller adds.
“At Irys, we are building something that gives that power back. We are not trying to save an industry, we are trying to treat it better.”
Irys promises high-quality 50-megabyte image uploads, no advertising, and no data selling. Following a trial period, the platform is now available for download via the App store.
As Schaller puts it, “Photography isn’t broken. It doesn’t need fixing. It needs respect.”
