Swedish medium format camera manufacturer Hasselblad has announced the X1D - the world's first mirrorless medium-format camera.

Information is still a little scarce, but the new camera reportedly weighs less than half the weight of a conventional digital medium format camera. If what we've heard is true, the 50MP X1D could bring medium format photography to an entirely new market.

Hasselblad says the X1D is handmade in Sweden. It's 50MP CMOS sensor offers 14 stops of dynamic range and Hasselblad have also developed a new family of dedicated autofocus lenses to complement the new mirrorless camera; currently the new XCD lenses are available in 45mm and 90mm focal lengths. The X1D is also compatible with all 12 lenses and lens accessories from the Hasselblad professional H System, although an adapter is required.

Interestingly, the X1D offers full flash synchronisation up to 1/2000th second. The new camera weighs in at a respectable 725g and also features HD video, Wi-Fi and built-in GPS, as well as a dust and weatherproof body.

We'll let you know more about the X1D as information comes out.
