Award-winning exhibition explores modern masculinity in Tasmania
An award-winning multimedia exhibition exploring masculinity, vulnerability and emotional wellbeing is set to open in northwest Tasmania this week.
Men with Heart will run at The Hive from May 9 to July 26, featuring photography, written works and video interviews centred on the experiences of Australian men.
Created by acclaimed photographer Paul Hoelen over almost two decades, the exhibition documents intimate moments from the Tasmanian Men’s Gathering, capturing men discussing personal struggles, relationships, fatherhood and mental health in a confidential setting.
Organisers say the project aims to present a broader and more nuanced view of masculinity at a time when public discussion often focuses on negative male behaviour.
The exhibition highlights themes of openness, courage and connection, with participants sharing stories about working to become better fathers, partners, brothers and sons.
Alongside Hoelen’s photography, the exhibition includes written stories and poetry from participants, as well as video interviews produced by ABC filmmaker Troy Melville.
The exhibition has previously received multiple awards for its contribution to conversations around men’s health and wellbeing.
Men with Heart is open daily from 10am to 4pm at The Hive in Ulverstone. You can find out more here.
