The January issue of Australian Photography + digital is out in newsagencies, via subscription and on iPad.
In the January edition of Australian Photography + digital
we look at the work of Sue Nicol, who was for a long time an enthusiast photographer,
before she decided to make the big leap into a professional career. We look at
her lead-up to her first solo exhibition of images, and discuss her philosophy
and approach to making images. We also have a list of useful tips Nicol shares
with us, based on her experiences in turning pro.
In our Reader’s Showcase photographer Rebecca Nathan
explains the thinking behind her mystical, ethereal forest images of floating,
dancing bodies and ghost-like apparitions, while our regular software expert
Mark Galer looks at the steps involved in producing the “toy camera” effect
with your images. For something a bit different, check out our story on the
intricacies of “photographers’ etiquette”. How should you react when your
favourite landscape lookout is overcrowded right at the time the sun is setting
- fight or flight? See what Barbara Burkhardt
reckons!
Technical writer Peter Burian discusses the growing range of
compact outdoor-style cameras, which are designed to take a few knocks and
still deliver outstanding images, be it in the water, at the beach, or on a
rugged bush trail, and discusses the features manufacturers are installing to
maximise the shooting potential of this class of camera. We also test the
Canon SLR, the 650D, which is packed with features, and the unusual
Tokina 300mm mirror lens, which offers a lightweight and relatively inexpensive
telephoto option for enthusiasts.
It’s also worth checking out our regular Your Best Shot
competition feature (this month illustrating some amazing low-light images),
and our very popular Image Doctor column, where Saima Morel offers some useful
advice for those keen to improve their image-taking abilities.
