Speaking about the image, AP's Mike O'Connor said it captured a real sense of isolation.
"When you immediately see a scene that's as striking as this, many photographers will try and get as close as possible and fill the frame to show every little detail. What I liked about Erika's image was she gives space for her subject to breathe, and also has chosen to edit the image subtly - it doesn't need the Clarity cranked to +100 to still be a powerful nature shot."
Erika wins a 12-month print subscription to AP or Capture magazine.

Over on Facebook, Cynthia Soding knocked the People's choice vote out of the ballpark, with her image Sugar Pine Walk easily taking out the award this month with 116 votes at competition close.
