Hi Mark,

In reading the list of adjustments you  made to this photograph, I can't help wondering if you are letting the technical aspects get in the way of a good photograph. Nowadays most serious photographers prefer to work in RAW mode, and in RAW all of the adjustments that you make on the camera (with the exception of ISO, shutter speed and aperture settings) are pretty much ignored by the time the photograph reaches your computer. The initial settings on the camera, like the White Balance, might give the RAW convertor a starting point when you open up the file, but most photographers usually go on to make all the serious adjustments from there. I think you need to forget about the numbers for a while and learn to feel the image.

Now, while you have used a 10-stop Neutral Density (ND) filter to slow down the exposure and get some movement in the water and the sky, I feel you would have had more benefit using a Graduated Neutral Density filter in this instance. This would have helped maintain more detail in the sky while at the same time revealing more of the foreground.

Given the chance I would go back to this location and do some more experimentation. Try using the graduated neutral density filter and perhaps try using a longer lens too. I think over time you will be surprised how many different images you can make from this one location.

Cheers,

Anthony
