Video: The cut-price portrait lens shoot-out

Here's an interesting new comparison video, that puts two of the most affordable full frame portrait lenses under the spotlight: pitting the Brightin Star 85mm f/1.8 against the Viltrox AF 85mm f/2 EVO FE.

Both sit in the budget-friendly “why is this so cheap?” category, with the Brightin Star retailing for about $370 on AliExpress, and the Viltrox AF 85mm f/2 EVO FE about $300.

YouTuber Arthur R's test focuses on real-world performance using a Sony a7C rather than lab charts.

Arthur’s side-by-side samples show that wide-open sharpness in the centre is effectively a draw, turning attention to how each lens renders eyes, skin and background blur.

The Brightin Star produces slightly larger blur circles, while the Viltrox delivers smoother, cleaner bokeh with fewer fringes.

Build and handling reveal clearer contrasts. The Brightin Star’s all-metal construction gives it a dense, “metal brick” feel, paired with a stiff, de-clicked aperture ring that suits video but can slow quick adjustments. The Viltrox, by comparison, is lighter, more compact and offers a more refined, clicky aperture ring.

What's most remarkable about the comparison though is just how good both lenses are - proving that you don't need to spend a fortune for impressive image quality in 2025.
