Synology has introduced two new DiskStation models, the DS1825+ and DS725+.

Designed to function as either Network Attached Storage (NAS) or Storage Area Network (SAN) devices, the DS1825+ comes with eight drive bays, while the more compact DS725+ includes two.

These new models join Synology’s growing 25-series range, which also includes the DS425+, DS925+, and DS1525+. All models in the series feature 2.5GbE RJ-45 ports and M.2 NVMe slots for SSD caching or all-flash storage.

With the exception of the DS425+, they also support expansion modules, allowing users to increase their total storage capacity as needed.

According to Synology product manager Jeffrey Huang, the DS1825+ is aimed at users who require a robust and expandable solution for tasks like collaboration, data sharing, and high-performance workflows.

The DS725+, meanwhile, is described as a compact but capable system that suits home offices, and small teams. Anya Lin, another product manager at Synology, notes that it delivers strong performance in a much smaller footprint, making it ideal for tighter workspaces.

The DS1825+ includes two 2.5GbE ports, two M.2 NVMe slots, and a PCIe 3.0 expansion slot that can be used for optional 10GbE or 25GbE network upgrades.

With SSDs installed, the unit can achieve read speeds up to 2,239 MB/s and write speeds up to 1,573 MB/s—fast enough for high-resolution photo libraries and demanding video production.

It also supports up to two DX525 expansion units, which push its raw storage capacity up to 360TB.

In a RAID 5 configuration, this translates to roughly 309TB of usable space. For those needing help planning their setup, Synology offers an online storage calculator.

While the DS725+ can’t match the raw capacity of its larger sibling, it still holds its own. It supports one DX525 expansion unit, bringing its potential raw capacity up to 140TB.

It comes equipped with a 2.5GbE port, a 1GbE port, and two M.2 NVMe slots, making it more than capable for most small-office or creative workloads.

Both new models require Synology-certified drives for full compatibility. While this isn’t typically a problem for 3.5-inch SATA hard drives, SSD options can be more costly.

However, as you might expect Synology maintains that using approved drives ensures reliable and consistent performance across all systems.

The DS1825+ and DS725+ will be available soon through Synology’s website and authorised resellers. The DS1825+ is priced at $1,150 USD ($1,760 AUD) without any included drives, while the DS725+ is available for $520 ($795 AUD).
