Nikon confirms Nikkor Z 120-300mm f/2.8 TC VR S is coming - but it likely won't be cheap

Nikon has lifted the lid on a new high-end telephoto zoom for its mirrorless lineup, confirming development of the Nikkor Z 120-300mm f/2.8 TC VR S.

Designed for Nikon’s full-frame Z-series cameras, the lens is shaping up as a serious piece of kit for sports, wildlife and action photographers, pairing a fast constant f/2.8 aperture with a built-in 1.4x teleconverter.

That means photographers will be able to jump from 300mm out to 420mm without changing lenses, handy when the action suddenly gets a little further away.

Nikon says the lens will join its premium S-Line range, which is reserved for the company’s top-tier optics, with an emphasis on image quality, performance and build.

Beyond the basic specs, Nikon is keeping any other details close to the chest for now. There’s no word yet on pricing or availability, although the polished product render released alongside the announcement suggests the lens may not be too far off.

The company already offers the NIKKOR Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S for Z-mount shooters wanting extra reach, but the new 120-300mm appears aimed at a more professional crowd.

And while Nikon hasn’t hinted at pricing, lenses of this calibre rarely come cheap. For context, the NIKKOR Z 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S debuted at around AU$15,000, so expect this one to sit firmly in aspirational territory.
