Nikon apologises; Issues service advisory for three popular mirrorless models

Nikon has issued a service advisory for three of its current mirrorless camera models after identifying a manufacturing issue that could render some units inoperable.

The new Nikon Z6 III looks about the same as its two forebears, but on the inside the smarts have been improved dramatically.

The advisory, released on March 17, affects select units of the Nikon Z6 III, Nikon Z5 II and Nikon ZR. According to the company, a number of cameras were produced using components that do not meet its internal quality standards.

Nikon says not all cameras within these models are impacted, with affected units identified by specific serial number ranges. Photographers are being urged to check their camera’s serial number via Nikon’s regional service portals to determine whether their equipment is included.

Looking straight into the Z5II you can see how relatively compact this camera is. Note the two function buttons tucked in next to the hand-grip, just where you would also find them on Nikons more advanced cameras.

The issue has prompted advisories across multiple markets, including Australia, the United States and Europe. Regional differences apply, however, with Canada only receiving affected ZR units, while Singapore’s advisory is limited to the Z5 II.

Repairs are set to begin from March 23, with Nikon confirming that all fixes will be carried out free of charge, including shipping. The company also notes that the service applies regardless of warranty status.

While Nikon has not disclosed the exact components involved, it has acknowledged the potential for the fault to cause cameras to stop functioning entirely.

In a statement accompanying the advisory, the company apologised to users and reiterated its commitment to product quality, noting that steps are being taken to prevent similar issues in future production runs.
