Fujifilm announce GFX-50R: a rangefinder-style medium format camera

Comments Comments

Fujifilm has announced the GFX 50R, a smaller rangefinder-styled camera that's modelled on the company's GFX 50S medium format camera.

Internally both cameras are similar, with the differences being the design, weight and price.  Both use the same 51.4MP, 3.8 x 32.9mm medium-format sensor sensor, with the GFX 50R the more portable and lighter of the two. The 50R weighs 145g less than the 50S at 775g, but keeps similar levels of weather sealing to its big brother, with the magnesium alloy body weather-sealed in 64 places. The camera body is also thinner, measuring in at 66.4mm thick - 22m thinner than the GFX 50S.

The 50S features a smaller 3.69 million dot viewfinder and has a more traditional viewfinder rather than the tiltable design on the GFX 50S. On the top of the camera are dials for shutter speed and exposure compensation, however there's no four-way controller, with swiping on the 3.2" touchscreen taking this role. On the side there's also dual SD UHS-II slots.

The 50R uses the same NP-T125 Li-ion battery as the GFX 50S, and unlike the 50S, will offer bluetooth.

Local pricing or availability has not been confirmed, but the Fujifilm GFX 50R is expected to be available in November for $4499 ($6,200AUD), and should retail for considerably less than the $9,999 GFX 50S was at launch.
