Eye-controlled Autofocus is coming to more Canon cameras

Canon has confirmed it will bring its eye control AF technology to more cameras in the future.

The technology, not to be confused with Eye Detect AF, alleviates the need to manually select autofocus points by instead tracking the user's pupil as it is held up to the electronic viewfinder.

This information is then mapped to where the pupil is looking on the viewfinder image, and uses those pixels to determine where to lock autofocus.

Despite first launching in the 90s, the only current Canon camera offering the technology is the Canon EOS R3.

However, in a recent interview with DPReview, the Canon executive leadership team discussed the future of the technology, confirming future Canon cameras will offer it.

"It's our mission as a camera manufacturer to figure out ways to make any camera system easier and more comfortable to operate. So, in terms of the eye control system, or eye-controlled focus, we intend to deploy this to various other models as well. At the same time, we’d like to improve the performance and usability."

"However, the eye control system is something that takes a long time to develop. It’s also a costly device to develop and manufacture, so we don’t wish for customers to have overexcited expectations for immediate deployment to other models."

Those same customers (and their overexcited expectations) will likely need to wait a bit longer, with Canon tight-lipped about which of their cameras will offer the tech. However, with the cost being high, it's likely to remain a flagship feature in the future.
