Ever wanted to shoot Leica glass on a Canon? You'll be able to soon

One of the great advantages mirrorless cameras have brought to photographers is the ability to pair almost any lens with your camera using adapters.

This opens up all sorts of cool creative possibilities. For example, you could mount that vintage Russian Helios-44 58mm f/2 lens you've had sitting in your drawer since 1983 to a Sony A7R, often with a relatively inexpensive adapter.

But now that mirrorless technology is widely established and mature, almost every possible lens-to-camera adapter combination exists, with only a few rare exceptions.

One of these has been Leica M to Canon RF with autofocus. Way back in 2020 we saw a Leica M to Nikon Z autofocus enabled adapter, and there's a few options for Leica M to Sony E-Mount. But the Canon equivalent has been the missing link.

Well, not any longer.

Megadap, well known for its autofocus enabled adapters for combinations like Sony E to Nikon Z series, has announced it is set to launch its new M2RF adapter, which it describes as the world’s first Leica M to Canon RF autofocus adapter, bringing motorised autofocus capability to manual focus Leica M-Mount lenses when used on Canon RF-mount cameras.

This design is similar to Megadap’s M-to-Nikon Z adapter launched in 2020, which successfully brought autofocus to lenses that were previously manual only.

The M2RF achieves focus by moving the mounted Leica M lens forward and backward.

According to the company, it is compatible with Canon’s Dual Pixel autofocus system, supporting Eye Detection, Subject Tracking, Face Priority, and continuous autofocus modes.

Even better, the adapter includes electronic contacts for transmitting EXIF data and also supports aperture selection via the camera itself.

The Megadap M2RF is scheduled for official release in May, with pricing to be confirmed.
