Canon has launched a video-centric version of the EOS R5, the 8K capable EOS R5 C.

Described by the company as a powerful, hybrid cinema camera, the EOS R5 C combines the filmmaking features of the Cinema EOS range with the EOS R System’s photo capabilities.

Like the EOS R5, the new body features a full frame CMOS sensor, DIGIC X processor and RF Mount, but the R5 C is also capable of 8K 60p RAW capture. Like the R5, the R5 C also offers 45 megapixel still photo capture at burst speeds up to 20 frames per second.

The EOS R5 C is capable of internal 8K 30p RAW recording and up to 60p when using an external power source, while an onboard internal active cooling system allows for limitless recording. The camera records 12-bit Cinema RAW Light internally, and Canon has also introduced three newly developed variations of RAW, including RAW HQ (High Quality), RAW ST (Standard Quality), and RAW LT (Light Quality).

The EOS R5 C also supports Canon’s 10-bit XF-AVC format up to 810Mbps and MP4 options, and AF is managed by Canon's highly regarded Dual Pixel CMOS AF system.

At lower resolutions, 4K and Full HD are oversampled, with the R5 C capable of delivering 4K 120p resolution, without cropping the angle of view and maintaining full autofocus.

The R5 C also features two card slots – a CFexpress 2.0 Type B and UHS-II SD card slot, which allow for simultaneous recording of different formats, resolutions and bit depths.

The camera has the same Multi-Function Accessory Shoe found on the EOS R3 and XF605, and is capable of connecting and powering accessories like Canon’s DM-E1D Stereo Microphone and TASCAM’s CA-XLR2d Audio XLR Adapter. The EOS R5 C also features a dedicated Timecode In/Out terminal for integrating into a multi-camera setup.

The EOS R5 C has two separate menus for stills and video, and 13 assignable buttons. It features the same 0.5-inch high-resolution OLED viewfinder with 5.76 million dots as on the R5, and a dot-matrix display on the top for checking camera settings. The rear features an articulating 3.2-inch HD LCD monitor.

Finally, the R5 C weighs in at 680g, 58g lighter than the R5, despite offering a similar magnesium alloy body with dust and weather sealing.

The EOS R5 C has an RRP of $7,499.00, and will be available in Australia in March.
