I am a wildlife rescuer. This was an image I took after I started to cut this wombat joey from its dead mothers pouch on the side of the highway. I wanted to document how heartbreaking it is to discover a perfectly healthy pouch young who has simply not been reached in time. The wombat's pouch contracts to protect young, and so it was essentially stuck as it tried to climb free of its' cold mother. It still haunts name to remember this moment of discovery. A real reminder to make more people aware and checking the pouches of roadkill.
