Emily Cressy, The scientist (November theme: Together)
I took this photo in Candidasa in Bali. It was about 9 months after my husband died. He took his own life and I found him in our home in Australia. My family booked a ticket for me to Bali because I couldn’t find the steps of desire to start moving on. After 6 months on Bali living in a backpackers I decided to rent a scooter and drive to Amed to start a course in free diving. It was a long drive so I stayed at a place called Candidasa. I was still so depressed but pushed myself to walk from my room to the beach which could only have been 50m away. I lucked out with the time of day and took this image begrudgingly. When I returned to my room I looked at the photo and saw the people standing in it. One person taking a photo of the beautiful sunset and another couple embracing living in the moment. This photo and moment was what I can only describe as hope for me. Hope that I would find beauty in the world again. Nearly 2 years later and I can tell you I finally have. I call it the scientist because I wrote a song for my husband which I named the scientist. The title is my remembrance of him
