The photograph, “Synthetic tree,” displays an object in the shape of a Christmas tree with baubles. This further exemplifies how humanity is slowly replacing our environment with material goods not only literally but with our mindsets and values. The monochromatic beige colour in the photograph symbolises that, although materialistic goods are beautiful, they are plain, unlike the wide variety of colours throughout the earth. Also, the photograph was taken with the object on the first vertical line of the rule of thirds, leaving room for empty whitespace in the background. This didactically represents how materials do not fullfill us. Therefore, it urges the audience to shift their values and regenerate their appreciation for our natural world.
