James Vodicka, Smoky Dawn (January theme: First light)
Surrounded by darkness, above and below the ocean's surface, the worst part about taking this style of photo is always the few minutes of waiting, out beyond the waves, as you try to think of things other than what may be lurking below. As soon as the glowing golden ball of the sun emerges above the horizon, the fear disappears and I find myself captivated by its presence. Witnessing the sun rise over the sea, golden light dancing across the ripples, tops a sleep-in any day of the week.
