Vineesh Ramakrishnan, Rituals of Dust and Heat (BIG AND SMALL - Entries close 31 March 2026)

Captured during a warm summer evening in a South Indian forest, these images show elephants engaging in a dust bath as the sun begins to set. In hot and dry conditions, elephants throw fine soil over their bodies to protect their skin from insects and intense sunlight, while also helping to regulate body temperature. Often performed as a group, this natural behaviour reflects both survival and social bonding within the herd during the harsh summer months. Captured on 30/01/2025 , used Canon R6mii, Canon RF 200-800mm F6.3- 9 IS USM. Lightroom
