Alexander MacGregor, New & Old (April theme: Detail)
My late Morfar, Georg aged 89, meeting his week old great granddaughter Holly for the first time shortly before he passed into the subtle light. He was one of the most influential people in my life, and not a day goes by where i don’t think about him. He was a keen photographer, a classical music enthusiast, an extremely talented writer and most importantly, a gentleman. He was in absolute awe of my Mormor May from day one. I have never in my 24 years of life seen someone so madly in love with another human being, even after 60 years of marriage. The unconditional love he bestowed upon everyone in his life is quite challenging to put into words, and i’ve only just scratched the surface of his amazing qualities. Holly is now 2 years old and has already taught me a stupendous amount about life. She is teaching me things that Morfar couldn’t. This wasn’t due to lack of effort, but more a lack of life experience on my behalf. Holly has taught me how to nurture a fragile undeveloped mind, much in the same way my grandfather nurtured me and supported every decision i made in life, even if it was a stupid one. Morfar was there by my side during my entire childhood, shaping me into the man i am today. Now, my mother is by Holly’s side every step of her journey through childhood. I can already see the strong bond between the two of them and i can’t wait to see what their relationship blossoms into later in life. My one wish is that i can be half the man to Holly that my Morfar was to me. If i can manage that, she will have a childhood i hope she will cherish for the rest of her life, as i do mine.
