Matthew Hagen, Nepali Community (March theme: Buildings)

Pictured is a Kathmandu city skyline. Vibrant colors adorn apartment buildings that stack on top of each other into the background. Blankets and clothes hang to dry, bringing a sense of life, community and connection to the observer. Varying architectural features and building materials insure individuality, as well as provide interesting juxtaposition. Architecture acknowledges the soul and character of locations displayed through the work of the people that live there- through their architectural creations. Architecture tells stories of utility and necessity, as well as frivolity, excess, spoils and ultimately success leading to the creation of the gorgeous, weird, intricate, unnecessary, essential or ornate.
