Vincent Khang, Mathematics behind architecture (December theme: Architecture)
The outside boarders of SAHMRI (South Australian Health and Medical Research Institution) was created by adding series of triangles that would interact advantageously depending on the intensity of the sun. These triangles create a kind of prism which would allow light to be reflected away to cool down the building during hot seasons. Additionally, another interesting reason why the building was constructed in this matter was due to the hidden benefits of triangles in maths. Equilateral triangles are one of the strongest shapes for architectural designs as the three vertices are rearranged and spaces 60 degrees from one another, creating maximum stability. This is why it would be ideal to engineer this building out of triangles.
