Natalie Cunningham, Malia Kahlo (PEOPLE 2022)

A portrait series inspired by the work of Frida Kahlo; celebrating a pioneering and iconic feminist artist who has inspired women all over the world to push boundaries for many decades. "Malia Kahlo" is saturated in pink, and sequenced to describe the progress of women's rights. It starts off in a state of acceptance of her assigned gender role followed by expressions of discontentment and exhaustion to describe the feelings of suppression and fighting against it. The final image describes the present. It isn't perfect but there is hope and change.
