Mark Kriedemann, Lean Seawards (ENTRIES CLOSED - March theme: The Great Outdoors)
So Nang fishermen in Thailand scramble to get their longtail boats out for the day’s work. I decided to head right down to be level with the fishermen so as to introduce a sense of chaos, while also trying to use careful placement of the fishermen in my composition to depict that chaos. This seemed to be a thematically appropriate way to shoot the scene since, while it was overtly chaotic, there was a careful negotiation of other craft by the fishermen that suggested an order within the chaos. To really emphasise the nostalgic nature of such a scene (from the perspective of an Australian where things are often so ordered and regulated), I deliberately reduced clarity and even added a grain effect in-camera. I then fiddled with the levels a little to boost the mid tones and soften the whites.
