Russell Mottram, Ice cave in the Katla volcano glacier, Iceland May 2023 (SINGLE SHOT 2023)
This photo was taken with a Samsung A52 during a visit to the Katla volcano glacier and ice cave in Iceland. The ice in the glacier absorbs the light spectrum except for blue which is why the ice appears blue at the entrance. Rather than use a cropped version of the photo that focuses on the cave opening, I felt it was appropriate to include the alien-esque tunnel and the narrow wooden beams and guide ropes that provided crossings over the torrents of ice water rushing underneath. The whole experience was actually quite terrifying given that the cave was melting on all exposed surfaces and the creaking and cracking sounds of the glacier provided zero reassurance that where I was standing was not going to collapse into the water below.
