Graham Bowden, How To Catch A Fish (ANIMAL & NATURE 2024)

Early morning at a dam on the Western Darling Downs in Queensland the egrets were out fishing for breakfast in a manner I’d not previously seen. They’d cruise above the deeper water looking for movement and when they saw it down they would come and hit the water in a most inelegant manner for an egret then scoop forward and hopefully come up with a prize. It was certainly different to the usual egret habit of wading and rapidly grabbing their prey from shallow water.
