Griffin Lynch, Golden Hour Forager (ENTRIES CLOSED - June theme: Home)

This macro image captures a European Honeybee (Apis mellifera) mid-forage, frozen on a leaf blade. My primary goal with this frame was to experiment with extreme backlighting to create a dramatic interplay between light and shadow. By tracking the insect’s rapid movements and waiting for the sun to drop perfectly behind the foliage, I managed to capture a striking golden rim-light that illuminates the intricate, fine hairs covering its thorax and compound eye. This intense highlight isolates the subject seamlessly from the deep, shadowed background, lending an ethereal quality to a split-second moment in nature. In post-production, I utilized Adobe Lightroom to subtly lower the blacks, enriching the negative space around the bee. I applied a selective radial mask over the subject to gently boost the mid-tone contrast and whites, ensuring the organic textures and golden tones pop without sacrificing the natural atmosphere of the scene.
