Amber King, Flyby (September Theme: Birds)

Eaglehawk Neck, Tasmania An Shy Albatross glides by to see what food he can spot and easy landing spots. An amazing moment of sea life interacting and the ecosystems at play. We were on a Fluke Count on the coast of Tasmania and only expected to see seals and perhaps a whale, little did we know we were in for a show. Three whales were feeding and would come up from under the depths, their arrival was frantically heralded by the seals and birds diving for fish and a mouthful of krill before the whales surfaced and took a gulp. The water was a flurry of wings, flippers and fins. A sight truly chaotic and exhilarating. The Albatross would dive down and capture a mouthful before scooting across the water out of the way. We counted about 50 Albatross, Buller’s and Shy with gulls, Terns and Gannets also following the mammals. A once in a lifetime sighting.
