Adrian Stavovy, Big City Skater (LIGHT/SHADOW - Entries close 30 September 2026)

The image is taken in an area of the Melbourne CBD called the Flinders St Viaduct which is an elevated series of rail bridges built in the early 1890’s. At the right times during summer through the gaps between bridges you can sometimes get this wonderful chiaroscuro impact of strong diagonals between light and shadow. In post editing I made a series of masking filters to balance the exposure across the light areas, a touch of colour grading and saturation to strengthen the feel of the scene and cropping to tighten the filmic quality of the image. I like this shot because with the strongly defined light and shadow areas it has a sort of gritty big city New York kind of quality, an aesthetic which is sort of built into the Ricoh GR series of cameras.
